Once Upon A Dream Poem by David Wood

Once Upon A Dream

Rating: 5.0

Once upon a midnight dream
The dreams of youth could now be seen
When I was full of innocence and young
And happy Christmas songs were sung
I'd wake up on a cold winter's morn
From under horse blankets that were worn
And watch my breath form a mist in the air
Then look out the window that was square
And frosted from the inside by the cold
Where a pot plant stood tall but old.

The pot plant, a geranium, was my friend
In those days long gone it was a godsend
For life then was very ordinary and bland
With no one around to hold your hand
When all grown-ups look big and tall
And you'd worry that they'd shout or bawl
You'd look out to see knee deep snow
Where a chill wind would often blow
After breakfast when all washed and dressed
Off to school you'd trudge to do your best

When school was done and dinner gone
You'd slide in the snow like some old swan
And have snowball fights until it's dark
When someone came to lock the park
You'd drift off home all cold and wet
Where mum would moan and dad would fret
And ban you to your room for a couple of hours
Because they had those kind of powers
Those were the day of old now history
Now life is full of people with such sophistry.
