One In A Thousand Poem by Bill Galvin

One In A Thousand

A man can watch a thousand sunsets;
Live under a thousand full moons;
A man can hold a thousand secrets;
Love on a thousand days of Mays and Junes.

He can ride a thousand-thousand miles;
And think he'll never see love again;
He may hear or make a thousand denials;
Make a thousand starts before he begins.

A man can ignore a thousand regrets,
As he mines for thousands of jewels;
There'll be a thousand steps he forgets;
He'll cycle in and out of a thousand renewals.

A man may wait for a thousand days,
Because of a thousand ways to be wrong;
But when one-in-a-thousand wings his way,
He'll know her by the melody of her song.

bill, having spent some of this time between xmas and new year reading lyrics and listening to songs by hoagy carmichael, bob dylan, and bruce cockburn, it strikes me this poem could work as a song. glen kappy p.s. before reading this one i read your poem about leon and leonard. it has similarities to one of mine, listening to genius loves company christmas morning 2004. -gk

Very well done. I especially like the way you ended it: A man may wait for a thousand days, Because of a thousand ways to be wrong; But when one-in-a-thousand wings his way, He'll know her by the melody of her song.
