Only A Good Little Girl song Poem by Katherine Kay Graven

Only A Good Little Girl song

She did her best at five years old,
Then somehow made it through six, seven, and eight,
Trying to hold together four siblings

No mom or dad to teach right from wrong,
Still, she tried to keep everyone safe from harm.
She carried a weight that wasn't hers to bear,
Believing if she was good, they'd always be there

If she was a good little girl,
Would everything be okay?
Could she hold her siblings together
And keep the cars from driving away?
If she was a good little girl,
Would mommy let them stay?
Still not understanding to this very day.

She took care of them the best she could,
No dolls to hold like little girls should,
No bedtime stories or fairy tales told,
Her motherly love is what kept them from the cold.
No photographs taken to help her recall
The faces and years they had stolen from them all.
Five young siblings, frightened and afraid,
Then one by one, they were given away.

One day her siblings were all in her care,
Not understanding why these strangers in cars were there.
When she saw what was being done,
All she knew to do was run,
Hiding from what her mother was doing.
She watched them take her siblings,
Her heart shattered as they disappeared from view.
But hiding couldn't keep them together—
Then a car took her too.

If she was a good little girl,
Would everything be okay?
Could she hold her siblings together
And keep the cars from driving away?
If she was a good little girl,
Would mommy let them stay?
Still not understanding to this very day.

No memory of hugs and kisses,
But she remembered Mom and Dad,
Only pieces of a life gone missing
And questions about the love they had.
Memories stolen and sealed away,
Hidden where she couldn't see—
Found years later inside dusty boxes,
Proof that they were once a family.

Was it a mirror she broke?
Was it something she had done?
Did she somehow step out of line?
Was she the unwanted one?
Was it because her mother didn't love her?
Was her daddy the one to blame?
Why did everybody disappear,
Leaving haunting questions that still remain?

She was only a good little girl,
Trying to make everything okay,
Trying to hold her family together
As the cars carried them away.
She was only a good little girl—
It was never hers to save.
But she carried their absence inside her shattered heart
Through every passing day.

[Outro — voice softens, acoustic guitar alone]

Now her mom and dad are gone,
And there's no one left to say
What went wrong so long ago
Or why they were given away.
Was it revenge?
Did no one care?
She's searched throughout the years—
But every reason she went looking for
Just quietly disappeared.

She was only five years old…
Trying to be a good little girl.

Why didn't mommy

Let us stay ….
