Patience [ From 'naaladiyaar' In Tamil] Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

Patience [ From 'naaladiyaar' In Tamil]

71. O, Chief of the cool country where the falls make
wreaths of showers! Don't tell anything to fools
as they confuse and speak what they hear.
You had better deviate from them.

72. Bear with the silly talk of the unequal.
The wise people in the sea-girt world
don't treat intolerance as a good repute
but as something disgraceful.

73. O, Chief of the ocean surrounded cool coast
where the bees ring in joy in all the flowers!
When they give constructive support, will their
warnings hurt you like the sweet words of foes?

74. The people who know what they should know, restrain
themselves, fear the fearful, do things in ways
which the wise in the world praise, live happily
with what they get, never suffer in life.

75. when two are well-knit friends, evil conduct
burgeoning in one, the other should bear with
to some extent. If it is unbearable
don't make it public but leave off his friendship.

76. O, Chief of the land of forests! Though your friends
do harm to you, you think that harm should turn
to charm. You find fault with yourself and don't leave
your friends of; even the brutes don't desert friends.

77. O, Chief of the land with high hills and falls!
You have friendship with the great as they ignore
your crimes and turn you to good ways.
Can those who make no mistakes be our foes?

78. Though you suffer from want and hunger
don't tell such afflictions to the bad-natured.
If you want to renounce and seek not things
from others, you tell them about your want.

79. O, Chief of hill tracts with streaming falls!
When you seek pleasure, don't lose your honour.
If you want to retain or detain your mirth,
do it in faultless means.

80. When you slide towards misery, don't trick
the wise to suffer. When penury makes you
lean and weak, don't beg the misers for help.
Don't tell lies e'en if enormous wealth assured.
