Patiently Waiting Poem by Nell Sheridan

Patiently Waiting

Rating: 5.0

Basking quietly, conversing idly with my coffee cup, as the steam slowly dissipates,
A crisp cigarette, perched upon the ashtray, slowly burning as it patiently awaits,
Twisting my pen around my fingers, pausing momentarily, holding the tip to my cheek,
Rummaging determinedly, exploring every possibility before capturing the phrase I seek,
Solely focused, I continue my discussion with the inanimate object, so recently befriended,
Openly discussing my thoughts, while attempting to illustrate, the meaning intended,
I picture you, somewhere beyond, methodically working through your mundane day,
Distinctive by nature, the brightest of red, shining upon the life canvass of grey,
A half smile emerges, whilst envisioning, your warm sweet essence that still lingers reassuringly,
Your scent upon your pillow, towel upon the floor, belongings tossed adoringly,
The imperfections left behind, a result of your chaotic nature, a signature of your beautiful existence,
Like opposing magnets, our personalities repelling, together we stand despite our resistance,
Secretly I laugh, your infuriating stubborn nature, the angle of your chin while defending your morals,
That familiar look you display, sprouting insightful wisdom continually, throughout our quarrels,
The little sigh that escapes, when you decide, there is absolutely no way to reason with your adversary,
I decided to marry you, in just such a disagreement, whilst the comments flew by in our mutual parry,
So incredibly different in every conceivable way, yet loving so passionately, laughing at our incredible contrast,
A smile that melts the present moment, fading all our words of damnation, into a faded distant past,
Never has irritation been so delicious, so desperately desired, never have I experienced such addiction,
All I want is to love and hate you completely, until death do us part, with nothing less than the ultimate conviction,
Tonight you will sleep, one hand warm across my waist, while I dream of you fully contented,
Your face against my hair, each and every emotion you have, noticeably displayed and adequately represented,
In the morning you will kiss me, preparing carefully yet hurriedly, for the day that looms mysteriously ahead,
Curled up warm and quiet, dreams drifting continually past, sleeping comfortably with your pillow in our bed,
Rising slowly selecting my agenda, priorities to you and you alone, writing diligently all I want you to know,
Soon you will return and with regret I must close, your smile upon seeing me, is worth a thousand handwritten words I bestow,
My coffee now cold and unwanted, the cigarette nothing but ash, my cup confirms its meaningless affirmation,
This story of feelings I have created, my one sided point of view, a story crying out for suitable attention and vivid narration,
My letter finally complete, signed and sealed with my love, gathering dust in its bundle with all those remaining,
My thoughts heart and soul, the powerful insignificant message, all these written letters are containing,
One day you will read my work, one day you will truly comprehend, I am always patiently waiting,
Patiently waiting for a single moment, one single solitary moment with you, two souls genuinely relating,
