Polar Bears Poem by Bernadette Wiggin

Polar Bears

Big and powerful
Beautiful and strong
Depending on the ice for survival all year long

Serving as mothers, fathers, and hunters
They must go in search of food
Capturing and eating seals that unfortunately peak their heads up through the ice

The ice is melting, slowly disappearing into the vast ocean waters
Now they must swim in search of food and land
Not built to swim for extended periods of time,
Many drown

They are unsure of these late changes in their habitat
Unable to feed and care for their young
Desperate for help

Extinction nearing closer every day
They stand alone and helpless
Crying out to those who have the power
Receiving no answer in return
