Pond Scum Poem by Cheryl Lynn Moyer Peele

Pond Scum

Rating: 4.8

Pressure cooked dead zooplankton
and algae was initially sold to Americans
as medicinal snake oil. Several hundred
thousand bottles were consumed before
it’s energy usage proved more marketable.
Meanwhile in the town of Baku, Azerbijan,
North of Iran, villagers could dig a hole
in the ground, dropp in a live coal and start a fire.
Historically, trillions and trillions of gallons
of this lucrative pond scum has bubbled
up to the surface worldwide, naturally consumed
by hungry bacteria. One hundred fifty billion
is now spent annually to locate the remaining
desolate pools. America’s pipelines,161,000 miles
of arteries, half the distance to the moon await.

On abiotic hydrocarbons Evidence has it that Old theories fall flat When one looks to see What support can be For theories (pure speculation) Based on miss-direction. Known it is that in the primordial stew Of plants and (animals afew) There resulted petroleum (in deposits deep) Within earth's bowels to keep. Later discovery has made clear That there was much to fear If one attributed all to existence Of these life form's sombulence. Scientist now know that far from earth Hydrocarbons exist from a different birth And are abundant in composition That matches our accumulation. So before we attribute to the beast All upon which we feast, Perhaps it's better to dwell On the fact that in Earth's raging hell Hydrocarbons may be emerging To satisfy our craving. Methane and others can seep From those bowels hot and deep And replenish all that we may use As civilization man pursues. s
