Present Day Canada Poem by Gayathri Seetharam

Present Day Canada

Present Day Canada
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
The political climate in Canada
Is conducive to having the job done
And it has been the case with the LNG Project
And many other issues, national and global and other;

The TransCanada project suffered a setback
Or the right decision was taken by the Supreme Court
When it ruled against the pipelines intruding in
On the peaceful beauty of the Canadian landscapes
And the legacy passed on by the indigenous people
And other Canadians and Canadian residents,
Land and water relatively untainted by civilisation;

Canada, as a democracy, is doing well
Under the PMship of Justin Trudeau
Who speaks to the heart of the Canadian people
With his feminist agenda
And appeals to the better sides of the same people
When he apologised for four Canadian past wrongdoings
To the Indian people, the LGBTQ community and the indigenous people and the Jewish people;

The work atmosphere for me
Under this political climate
Has been ideal for productivity
And there is the promise of just rewards;

If there is impressionism in Canada
Swift and skillful brushstrokes of dabs of paint
In conjunction with traditional art
Portraits and landscapes painted with careful meticulousness
With painstaking attention to detail,
A different perspective on newfangled notions of the right kind of leadership
In juxtaposition to the old school of thought
Has given us a beautiful Canada.
