Proud To Be A Plan B Poem by Kayla Burress

Proud To Be A Plan B

I live my life in a waiting room,
anticipating my turn.
I wait for plan A to fail,
and for him to notice it's been me all along.

I've got time.
I'm patient.
He'll come around.
..I think.

I'm always here, in the dark corner of my mind,
ready to absorb his sorrows, ready to help him however possible.
But he's only there when it's convenient.
I'm just a back-up plan, and I know that.

It's not so bad.
Maybe some day.
He'll soon pick me.
..I hope.

But had it ever occurred to me that he'd never come?
That he'd never call out my name?
Had I ever once thought that my expiration date would pass,
without him once even thinking about choosing me?

I'm running out of time.
I'm wasting my life.
He'll never, ever look my way.
And soon, I'll slip from memory.

But a plan B is better than nothing, right?
I mean, he'll probably start to care.
It's okay, really. I'm proud to be an option.
So I guess I'll sit awhile longer,

collecting dust on a neglected shelf.
Wait for him to brush off the cobwebs.
After all,
I've nothing else to do.
