Punishment! To Forgive Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Punishment! To Forgive

Try not to remember,
What is told...
By another over and over.
Should be forgotten to forget.

Try to make sense and understand,
Someone forgiven.
Yet wants to keep it reminded,
Of something that they did.
They should not have done.
But can not let go of it.
To mention how they wish,
Understood...
As a mistake to have made.
Not one or two.
But many done to do.

"Do you remember,
When we were in elementary school.
And I lied on you.
Then you were punished for it? "

-Yes, I do.
That happened so many years ago
Although...
Every time you come around,
I am expecting punishment.
With a trying not to remember,
Your mistake.
And the sacrifices I made,
Over and over again...
Apologizing for the many lies you told.
To now know...
So much better I would feel today,
If I had been brave enough to lie...
As much as you did.-

"What did you expect me to do?
Tell the truth?
To then get punished for doing it? "
