Revoking Fear Poem by Kim Aouad

Revoking Fear

Rating: 5.0

Did you ever ask yourself why you laugh, when someone shows you the face they think is scary?
I think we laugh because we don't see fear the same way they do
What's scary to them might not be what is to us
We have different thoughts; our fears, eventhough they might be similar, are not the same
I once looked in the mirror when the lights were off and it was, to be honest, the scariest thing ever: I didn't see the self I'm used to seeing in the mirror rather a monster-as if I were a creature of the dark-it was literally the scariest thing I had ever seen
At first glance there was nothing there it was simply pure darkness
But as my eyes started getting used to this absence of light, I started imagining horrible things, scary scenes, eerie faces and shapes...
It seemed that the more I though of it the scarier the situation became
I believe that the..monster..I saw was my fears reflected upon a flat surface
This was everything I am afraid of portrayed in an object that reflects the truth
'An object that reflects the truth'
When I told my sister what happened then, she asked me to show her how I thought I looked like before I glanced in the mirror, so I did, and looked in the mirror before giving it a second thought, and saw the same thing I saw when I was in the dark.
But she laughed at me and said that I 'look like a plain potato-head smashed cucumber' (ouch but okay moving on haha)
She did not see what I saw
She did not feel what I did
Why didn't she?
Wasn't the mirror an 'object that reflects the truth', as I've already stated?
Yeah, it is
Which made me realize this:
Fear is not real. Fear is just an illusion that you yourself came up with. Think about it: you are afraid of what you are afraid of because your subconsciousness tells you that you are. But your subconsciousness knows what it is told. If you find a way to convince yourself that you are not afraid of whatever it is you are afraid of, this limiting fear you set up for yourself will disperse and your soul will be set free and allowed to soar high. You will not be able to move on as long as you are holding on to anchors; fears. Again, fear is but a self-evoked hallucination. Had it not been so my sister would have seen the monster I saw when I looked into the mirrors, reflectors of reality, the opposite of illusion. You can change this self. You can eliminate fear.
I, to be fair and honest, still did not step over this rock, but I am trying to
Whenever I start to think of what I am supposedly afraid of, I stare into my own eyes in the mirror, the reflector of the truth, and tell myself these exact words:
'Kim, you are a grown girl. You are supposed to know the difference between real and imaginary. And you do: what's real is what everyone can sense at any given moment, while what isn't is either something that no one can sense or no one but you can sense. This fear of yours, only you feel it. So it isn't real. Thus fear is not real. Stop believing that it is. This isn't real.'
Yeah, I do get glimpses of scary things while staring down my own demons, but that's just because I am staring them down
A demon's job is to scare us; fears scare us; fears are the silent demons that live within us
But they are inside of us
So we have dominance over them, that is if we convince ourselves that we do, of course
So yeah that basically is everything I know about fear
Don't let it control you You should be the one to control it

fear is but a self-evoked hallucination Yes, one could say it is a reflection in a dark mirror.

I think many of us faced this too..so do i, but there is no escape from it except we face it off..then fears have to be fear of our fearless strength...it just sometimes not so easy but do-able...so keep stronger to face life..because it has multifacetted sides
