Rhiannon Poem by Diana van den Berg

Rhiannon

Rhiannon
you have been blessed
with a perfect gift
second only to Life itself,
a baby, a life, to cherish and mould
to all that is good and pure and beautiful.

Let your heart quiver at the honour
this trust that God has placed in you as a mother;
for being a mother is the most celestial purpose
here on Earth;
let your courage be great enough
to take on this task with pride;
yet let your pride not be too great
nor your insulation too sealed
to admit that you sometimes need help
and advice
and understanding
and wisdom
from your own precious mother
and others;
let your determination be firm enough
to handle your commitments
with the love and respect and honour that Jacob deserves;
let your insight, compassion and empathy know
that Jacob is as fully a person
as any adult;
let your sensitivity allow you
to see the world through his eyes;
let your wisdom grow and flourish
to know – or take advice on – what is best for Jacob –
and what is best for you too –
for you need to be at peace
to be the best mother you can be.

You will find that it is harder
than anything you have ever done before
than anything you have ever contemplated before;
there will be fears and frustrations you have never dreamed of;
there will be sorrows and pain aplenty,
but joys a thousandfold more.
Motherhood is much worthier than anything on Earth.

It is a lifetime commitment
and even when your child is old and grey
and you, even older and greyer,
your child
will
always be
your child.

Take on this most blessed task
with honour, pride, humility, determination, hard work, wisdom,
but most of all with the love
that only a mother can give.
