Robert The Bruce Poem by Randy McClave

Robert The Bruce

The Scottish flag does still wave
As Robert the Bruce hides in a cave,
Another major battle he has lost
Scotland his country, could now be the cost.

In the solitude of the cave he now ponders
Back and forth in thought his mind wonders,
Lovely Caledonia once named by Rome
Now he must abandon her, his cherished home.

His Scottish army is now scattered all about
"SCOTLAND! " He wishes once again to shout,
But, now alone in a cold dark cave he hides
His honor, his survival, both take different sides.

His army and himself are finally defeated he does believe
Now Scotland his home, he must now forever leave,
But, before his decision grew any wider
Up on the cave's wall, he noticed a solitary spider.

The spider attempts to attach its web upon the cave's wall
But, every time that it tries, the web would fall,
But, the third time through perseverance it did succeed
The works of its destiny, Robert the Bruce then did heed.

Robert the Bruce would give his conquest just one more try
So, he gathered up his countrymen, for Scotland to live or die,
Remember these words that he recited to his countrymen;
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again."
