Role Playing Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Role Playing

Role playing the importance of effective listening,
Can for some,
Appear too dramatic to get to the point.
And unnecessary.

"Your spouse?
Are you sure,
They went along with this?
And they agreed to be tied to a chair.
With their hands handcuffed.
And mouth taped up.
I can come back to visit at another time.
I don't want to interfere...
With whatever is going on."

-No.
You've come at the right time.
My mate has agreed to have me show,
Why effective listening...
Is more important than running off at the mouth.
Without allowing someone else speak.
Then to tell them how stupid they are.
Right, my love? -

"And...
Your 'mate' has agreed to this? "

-Of course.
Ignore the look of fear in their eyes.
That's part of it.-

"And...
That knife you are holding?
Is that some kind of prop? "

-It's a performance device.
You see
I have this theory,
About showing someone what it feels like,
When they begin to interrupt one who speaks.
With it then to perceive,
Controlling the narrative is more important...
Then listening effectively.
Especially when one is not in the mood,
To be nagged everyday over something petty.
Right, my love? -

"I...uh...
Think I'd better go."

-No.
I want you to stay.
Be a witness.
I may need your suggestions.
My approach may not be as effective,
As I hope the results...
Of this role play leaves.
Oh...yes.
Why don't you hold the knife.
As I begin explaining patiently,
How I feel being called stupid.
Dumb and ignorant.
Yet expected to listen to the most petty,
Ignorant nonsense.-

"Uh..."

-Shut up.
Sit down. Relax and observe.
Don't look so nervous, my love.
We're role playing.
Remember.
I'm being you.
And you are being me.
The knife?
Think of it as being plunged into my heart.
Every time you call me stupid.
Okay.
Now.
Shall we begin?
Nod...up and down for yes.
And side to side for no.-
