Sandman Poem by Susan Vannatta

Sandman

Your warm body heats mine as
you lay next to me. I watch
you sleeping, dreaming. What is it
that you dream about at night?
I want to burrow into your mind and
watch the pictures flip
like a slideshow in your head. I
wish I could see the images that
make you mutter and stir. Perhaps
then I could fix them, alter your
disturbing ideas and soothe the
things that make your eyelids
tighten and flicker with pain.
Can’t I help you, heal you? Will
you let me into your thoughts,
trust me to make it better? All I
want is for you to have love,
my love, that could solve even
the answer to life if asked of it, but
you have only fear, love cannot be
complete with fear, for love is
comfort, and I cannot comfort you.
You have only fear and nightmares,
and I can do nothing.
