Shoes To Choose Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Shoes To Choose

Why look for something until it is found.
To not know what it is,
That is wanted.
Would it be better to know what is wanted.
To find it and then to know,
That which was wanted and found...
Eliminates 'something' known,
Not to really want in the first place.
With time to save knowing,
Exactly what it is...
The moment it is seen.
Without it to wonder about or look for.

"I know what I want! "

-How do you know that? -

"Because I no longer look,
For just anything.
To think it's what I want.
Later to discover,
I'm still looking."

-Are you talking about me or to me?
Which is it? -

"Well...
I will say this.
When I buy shoes,
I buy them for comfort.
Not for looks.
But...
If they look good.
And feel comfortable too?
Those are the shoes I will buy."

-So...
You are talking about me? -

"No.
I think it's your shoes.
And your face is a clue,
You're doing your best to ignore them.
That limp you've got?
I didn't notice until 'after',
You bought those shoes."

-You should have been a detective.-

"And 'we' should find a place to sit down.
You're beginning to have,
Just a little bit more 'swagger' in your walk.
Enough to have people in this mall,
Looking down at your feet."
