Side Altar Poem by Uriah Hamilton

Side Altar

I exist for this secret love
that has no solid future
but makes me feel alive
and momentarily hopeful.

I can't wait to see you again
at the hotel lobby with your friend
or in the vacant lot
where the kids skateboard until dusk.

For me, I conjure up a dream
when I see your face,
when we make some journey
to a new or forbidden place.

I think we care for each other in our way
but we're dogs that have been kicked
too many times in the teeth,
certainly a lasting relationship is out of reach.

In a minute, one can disappear
for a walk along the beach to gather his thoughts
or commit suicide at the side altar of a church
after his last votive candle is extinguished.
