Simple And Sober Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

Simple And Sober

Simple and sober

She was in my neighborhood
Simple, sober and very good
By nature and stood
By me even in sharing food

She was very poor
But stayed next door
And we could hear the bang of utensils
With no food pulses available it banged still

I knew her plight
But they were right
Never asked for helping hand
Till they were with us up to an end

The country had severe femine this year
And they had to move somewhere
We had no relation from the period
I really felt deep void

Even though she visited regularly
She was intelligent and made it homely
No other feeling than the closeness
And always bore smile on face

There after many years passed
And we had always missed
No word was received from their side
As they had found good employment and settled

I shared childhood photo with her
I used to mark with pencil on her face everywhere
This was only way I remembered
As she always mixed with me and shared

Simple And Sober
