Sixties Shopping List Poem by Margaret O Driscoll

The shop was fitted out with shelves
Filled with groceries to the floor
Canned food, soft drinks, toiletries
Vegetables, fresh fruit and much more

The shopkeeper scanned the shopping list
Two pounds of tea, beans and peas
A pound of tomatoes, baking soda, salad cream, a block of cheese

A jar of Bovril, brown sauce,
salt and a jar of mustard
Packets of jelly, tapioca, semolina
Sago and a can of Bird's custard

Lincoln Creams and Custard Creams
A packet of Angel Delight
Morning Coffees and Mariettas,
Cream Crackers to enjoy at night

On the counter a roll of brown paper
A batch loaf wrapped up last
The shopkeeper pared his pencil
then totted up the bill very fast
