Sleep Dear! Hold Me Tight - Poem by Savita Tyagi

Now that the world has brushed me aside
Ambition to make a difference isn't mine
Plumes of youth fallen to dust
Body frail and longing hushed
I am so willing to fall in your arms
Sleep dear! Hold me tight
Let me wander in a land afar
Where loving hearts still come to greet
Some from the world of light
Others of gleaming earthly delight
All breaking the barriers of time and distance
I thank them all for that glad reunion
When sleep comes in installments
It charges dues from anxious mind
Forbidding entrance to that serene world
Where about of that I only wonder
How rejuvenating to clamp down on clamor
Move beyond REM and sleep spindles
Lose all awareness of thought and feeling
To see, hear or know nothing
To slide in that blissful ignorance!
Sleep dear! Be kind to me
Keep me in your gentle embrace
Let me recede beyond the deepest layers of subconscious
Offer that quiet ambiance of nonexistence more often!

When life becomes an ordeal and we are tired of fighting against the odds of life, a sound sleep is a boon! Many of the old people who suffer from insomnia long for a deep sleep, so that they would be blissfully unconscious of the vexing problems of life.....! Beautifully put... Savita!

Thank you so much Valsa for reading and commenting. Yes value of sleep is known only when we are not able to get it. Though the poem was written couple of years back now I feel its value more than ever.

“A sleep spindle is a burst of oscillatory brain activity visible on an EEG that occurs during stage 2 sleep. It consists of 12–14 Hz waves that occur for at least 0.5 seconds. Sleep spindles are generated in the reticular nucleus of the thalamus.” ………….. why didn’t you just SAY SO! ? :) :) I don’t remember hearing of these, but I did learn of REM (rapid eye movements) in college psych (I think it was in psych) . I may have slept through half the classes. ok! 2/3rds.

I had trouble with a couple of lines near the center of the poem. and I thought once that you might be talking about a person when you typed “dear”, but I figured you meant ‘sleep, dear sleep’.
“Loose all awareness of thought and feeling” ………. loose or lose? maybe either?

yes, sleep can be wonderful. too bad we usually don’t realize how nice it is, as we sleep through it. BUT there have been several times when I’ve had ‘sleep’ try to keep me in its embrace, but I’ve been aware of consciousness (awake) but not wanting to or able to easily open my eyelids. it is one of the most peaceful moments!
“blissful ignorance! ” ……….. I am lucky that I am often in such a state while I’m awake.

the poem is very interesting. perhaps a nap is in order?

…….. are ‘we’ getting old? ? :) after reading ‘plumes’, I thought you might be a bird. an ostrich?

I especially enjoyed “How rejuvenating to clamp down on clamor”. nice one!

I’ll now put this into our July showcase on my PH site. thanks. bri :)
