Soldiers' Wish Poem by Amar Agarwala

Soldiers' Wish

Rating: 5.0

Tell them when you get home
What we soldiers say -
That for their tomorrows
We gave up our today.

This blessed life they have
Cause we sold our breath,
For their peace & freedom
At the altar of death.

We dared every danger
With our fearless toil,
Our bravery interred
On some alien soil.

Know we loved our nation
And countrymen too,
Never let vanity
Colour us with her hue.

We cared not for treasures
Nor cared for our death,
We shed blood for honour
Until our final breath.

Our patriotism etched
On cenotaphs meek,
Pray, leave your warm wishes
For that is all we seek.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
WAR MEMORIAL AT KOHIMA, NAGALAND

Reading about this cemetery, located in Kohima, I was inspired by the writing on a cenotaph, and felt it would be an apt tribute to contribute my verses to all those who gave up their tomorrows for our today.

The War Cemetery in Kohima is a memorial dedicated to soldiers of the 2nd British Division of the Allied Forces who died in the Second World War at Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, India, in April 1944. The soldiers died on the battleground of Garrison Hill in the tennis court area of the Deputy Commissioner's residence. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) , which maintains this cemetery among many others in the world, there are 1,420 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War at this cemetery, and a memorial to an additional 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were cremated in accordance with their faith. The memorial was inaugurated by Field Marshal Sir William Slim, then Commander of the 14th Army in Burma
