Speak For The Trees Poem by Danny Draper

Speak For The Trees

Rating: 5.0

I'm not the Lorax,
But I speak for the trees
Those woody shade spreaders
That vacuum the breeze,

Tortured bonsai in tiny homes
To high forest sky ticklers
And sculptured front liners
That cling to the coast,

To sweet fruit that they give
And vast flowers that please
Swathes of gay amenity
Brushed strokes along streets,

Chocolate pods urging greed
For palm oil unilaterally
To sweep away all breeds
So Globecorp always feeds,

Forests wiped clean universally
Clearing koala, sloth and orangutans
Insect, bird and genes untold
Once it's done it's fate resolved,

Narrower spreads life's tree
Branches truncated prematurely
With it disappears a specialty
That adapted well to adversity,

All they need is for roots to spread
And space to search and grow
To race reaching tips to the Sun
Stretching quietly all on their own,

They love friends as company
Under bark, nests in forks at ease
Ticklish tenants as hollows form
But not borers if you please,

They like a drink but not too much
And swaying helps them last
Damping as the energy flows
Downward to the soil and grass,

They want a place in every place
As spaces fit all kinds
They love a park or forest
And streets with no power lines,

They make waste as all life makes
But its breakdown's quick sublime
They do not foul land, air or sea
With waste that lasts all time,

So when you sit in a wooden chair
In a house with a wooden frame
Munching chocky snacks from a cardboard box
Remember well their name,

And recall well all of the things
That a tree has done for ME
And when it's time as it's always time
You too, may speak for the trees.

I'm so happy to meet a spokesmen for the trees! So few people seem to know, talk about or care about what is happening. See my (far less eloquent) Walnut Tree and Untimely ripped.

Danny..... glad to see you after a long gap! After reading this poem, no one will ever think of felling a tree! They want a place in every place As spaces fit all kinds They love a park or forest And streets with no power lines, Let us all care to give the trees congenial spaces to grow! Enjoyed the poem!
