Swan Song Poem by Barry Middleton

Swan Song

Rating: 5.0

just one swan song is not enough
so I must wander through my mind
along the roads I left behind

I cannot let those places go
a peaceful vale and shadowed creek
are here with me and seem to speak

I see a shy and lonely boy
that sought the loneliness within
in deepest woods where dreams begin

today an old man pays his debt
and I can hear what he might say
to that young boy of yesterday

I come to thank the ghostly past
I owe you everything I own
you knew each path that I would roam

I listen for the child's reply
we did the best we could old man
we built foundations in the sand

some men are born to be alone
come walk into these woods with me
among what is and used to be

I see them both as they retreat
they disappear into the trees
their laughter fades upon the breeze

Did you borrow 'One Swan Song is not enough' from my comment to you? And yet, you developed it into something far more amazing! The concept of your boyhood self and your present self leaving together, disappearing into the trees, calls forth the image of ball players disappearing into the cornfields in the film Field of Dreams- - but your image is more beautiful and profound. Lovely picture, too!

Yes this is the poem inspired by your comment. The last goodbye is to the self. It involves acceptance and self forgiveness. If successful. it moves ahead to the next stage without deep regrets. Glad you liked what I was able to do with the idea. And thanks.

Reality! In fact when one gets old and turns back his memories, meets himself as another person, young being trying to explore the world. You, Barry, express it here by the best way. The happiness of the authenticity of life in its two forms, the prime and mature. To be happy by both, as expressed here is a hymn to it, for having experienced it.
