That An Omnipotent God Exists (Villanelle) Poem by Gert Strydom

That An Omnipotent God Exists (Villanelle)

That an omnipotent God exists I knew from my third year
and when my dog died, to my mother my prayer seemed in vane,
I did not realise it but somehow knew that He was near,

I saw that stiff dog suddenly stir, did its awakening bark hear,
where there were from its illness in my childish heart pain.
That an omnipotent God exists I knew from my third year

and where a second wave kills its impact to me becomes clear,
where people who I worked with dies, from a deadlier strain.
I did not realise it but somehow knew that He was near

and I know against all evil God has His plans in gear,
that in essence very close He does omnipresent remain.
That an omnipotent God exists I knew from my third year

and the happy barking of that little dog remains in my ear.
In the gravest and greatest danger my life He did sustain,
I did not realise it but somehow knew that He was near.

He does know the things that every person in life does fear
and daily God does all of life in its functioning maintain.
That an omnipotent God exists I knew from my third year,
I did not realise it but somehow knew that He was near.
