That Corpse Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

That Corpse

That corpse

Can never forget what,
Was there, I never saw.

Some bones and pubic hair!

That is what people said,
Not for me, I was a child.

Decades came and are gone,
I am a grown-up…

But no use, not at all!

Now, I live in exile,
Things have changed,
And no one…

No one knows what happened,
To those bones, pubic hair!

It was my history,
It was my ancestor's,
Trace of the old faiths.

Is it there in the earth?
Under feet, turned powder?
Did fly the particles in the air?

That was my history,
The umbilical cord,
My birthmark…

I, owner of that land,
A Native, First Nation,
Now shackled far away,
Feel homeless, immigrant.

This is why I do share,
My cousins' killer pain,
All of them, regardless
Africans or the Indians!
