The Aftermath Poem by SJ. Sharkey

The Aftermath

There was only shadow, darker than night
So it was hard for the body to adjust its eyes;
Searching for some sweetness hidden in light
No glow could quieten those unremitting lies.
And though we may try with all our might
We cannot have back what withers and dies.
You will not escape the mindless distress,
While others ignore the pain on your face,
The way your hair has matted into such mess
And the weighted memories packed in your suitcase.
To be free of them you assuredly confess,
But are tethered and bound by some acid lace.

On my doorstep I find you now,
Never more meaning in your statement;
That you would hang from a willing bough
Was it not for this friend who would lament.
Your mind and heart cannot fathom how
But you'll soon forget this malcontent.
