The American West: Justice Often Ruled Roughshod Poem by Terence George Craddock

The American West: Justice Often Ruled Roughshod

time shifts
contemplating
evaluating
time shifts

a few time shifts
from the pages
of history constantly
glaringly stand out

once in the time
of the American West
conceived of as a frontier
in the age of adventurers

explorers
pilgrims
seeking
new lands

trappers
settlers
cowboys
goldminers;

there was a nasty
terminal saying,
'the only good indian is a dead indian'
good Christian people said …

were they a product
of their time
rooted in hatred
fear bigotry?
