The Ancient City Poem by Adisa Oludare Enitan

The Ancient City

Rating: 3.0

I know of a city
scattered in the hills
like the lost boys of Sudan
an ancient city of great possibilities

I know of a city
controlled by balky leaders
headquarters of uniformed thugs
citadel of vicious politics

I know of a city
basking in the euphoria of it past
a land of cultured and sentimental people
devoid of commitment and service

I know of a city
where unruly gods are celebrated
a land of shrines
a collection of abnormalities

I know of IBADAN
a city of decayed heads and fatigued legs
sunshine of scattered showers
a land whose greatness is sung in the waves
