The Baby Bird Poem by LeeAnn Azzopardi

The Baby Bird

Rating: 5.0

Walking back from the coffee shop
I came across a baby bird on the sidewalk
It was lying there with a twitching leg
I looked at it hoping it wasn't
But knew it was dead
I looked around and saw no one
So, I cupped it up into my hands
And held it until I got to my backyard
I found the small shovel
And started to dig a hole
As my crucifix was recording the light
Into my eyes
Blinding me for a moment
I wondered why I was doing this
I mean I could have kick it down the sewer
However, I knew I was showing the respect for life
When the hole was completed
I laid the bird in it and covered it up
And went to wash up for dinner
