The Best Way Out Poem by Tatenda Divine Makasi

The Best Way Out

When l was five, l thought the best way out was to cry
I felt overwhelmed and without those shut-up snacks l could die
As l grew older, pain felt more real but endurable
For quite a while my soul was undefeatable

Then adding five, l then felt more peaceful and alive
For the first time I discovered freedom and happiness much alike
As l grew older, years were moving faster than days
Each day was a testimony, l could imagine my life in better ways

Another five, peace, freedom, happiness, and my heart broke within
My desires and my soul were fighting and I was somewhere in between
As l grew older, the endurable pain became a burden to my restless mind and heart
Subsequently, my mind was torn apart and l can't find the best way out
