The Brick Kiln Poem by keith brown

The Brick Kiln

The brick kiln

The kiln was bloody hot that day When bluey cleared the fence
He could have used the gate if he'd used his common sense

But he cleared the fence and landed on top of old jacks Ute
I swear he jumped so bloody high he could have used a parachute
He stumbled of the Ute, down the track straight into the dam
You could fair hear the water sizzle as it touched his red hot hands

Bluey stood there groaning, for quite a little while
Till some wag on the other side yelled
Watchout for the crocodile
Well bluey forgot about his hands despite the heat and burn
And cleared that barbed wired fenceby ten feet on his return

He landed fair square dinkum by the kiln where he'd begun
He looked the ganger in the eye and said that really wasn't fun
My hands where burntI had no choice poor old bluey cried
I had to jump the fence the waters on the other side

He jumped around and shook his hands like an emu in a fit
Those bricks are bloody hot he said I should have used me mitts
Well bluey had to give the brick making game away
but his jump is still remembered By the gangers there today

They put a sign down by the fence that bluey had to jump
It's hanging there for all to see on the old hand water pump
