The Day After Anzac Day Poem by keith brown

The Day After Anzac Day

The day after Anzac Day
When your down at your RSL
You've ordered up your roast
The sun is going down and their playing the last post
As your standing there respectively
Waiting for your lamb
Just give a moments though to the lads from Vietnam

There's a million words been written in song and poetry
About the Coo March, and the boys of Gallipoli,
Villers-Bretonneux, Normandy and the Somme
Every man a hero on the day we brought them home

This was not the same for the lads that fought Long Tan
Endured the agent orange and battled at khe Sanh.
Death a silent whisper behind every jungle tree
Yet no support forthcoming from the homeland of the free
Sure the boys received their letters from the ones they loved the most
But a nation doesn't celebrate a war that they have lost

So our boys came home to ridicule, indifference and spite, yet,
There'd weathered more than ten long years of conflict and fire fight
Then they returned home to be forgotten and chastised
It took another twenty years until we realised
These men where unsung hero's and deserved their place beside
All our other Anzacs who had served and fought and died

So when they play the last post and your waiting for your lamb
Just give a special thought to boys who fought in Nam

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A Anzac Day like no other, out on the balcony or street to pay respects, lots of media coverage, almost all historical, boy soldiers.all very emotional but little about Vietnam
I'm not a vet but it doesn't seem right not too mention. We lost the war but we had four vc awarded. For those overseas rsl is our returned serves clubs, last post is played at sundown across all clubs through the nation, I also which this poem to recognise all viet vets regardless of nationality
