The Dark Place Poem by H E Alexander

The Dark Place

You cannot see, you cannot go,
to where I hide, where only I know.
You cannot touch, you cannot feel,
but it is there, it is true, it is real.
There is no light, no nothing;
nothing shines within this place.
I have no eyes, I have no sight,
there is nothing to see, I have no face.

I go alone, you cannot come
to a dark place, where there is no-one;
no-one but me and my reddened dreams,
my saddened mind, my violent schemes.
I stand aloof and watch you beg,
I kill your passion and crush your grace,
I lend no lies, I bend no truth,
there's nothing here, but barren space.

I cloak my dream, I shed my fear,
but I cannot find salvation here,
except only my saving suicide, yet
despite the comfort of my safety net
to soften my fall and ease my escape
then leave a tear line's ghostly trace
upon the mourning bearers' pall
in this O so dark, disturbing place.

Once in time I would spend
days and nights here without end.
But this time now I have more control,
I return here only to search my soul.
To feed my mind, to analyse,
to help me seek and embrace
the inspiration I need to find
to free me forever from this dark place.
