The Day That I Die Poem by Juan Olivarez

The Day That I Die

The south wind should blow
On the day that I die.
The sun should shine warmly
From a clear blue sky.

No drizzle, no snow
No cold wintry wind.
No ice on tree branches,
Making them bend.

I want Texas Mockingbirds
Up in those trees.
To send up my eulogy
On a warm southern breeze.

I want cactus roses
To break out in bloom.
And a flock of brown sparrows
To carry me home.
