The Dichotomy Of Modernity Poem by Phillip Nine Mafunga

The Dichotomy Of Modernity

As the skies clapped their hands
And screamed with sparks of fury
The dark overhang was manacing
As the rivers tore their way downslope
Human greed and nature at variance
The very dichotomy of modernity

Remind me not of gullies
Remind me not of the open dongas
Let me not see the pits left open
Of strips of land left bare
Of silted rivers that no longer flow
Of land degradation and avarice

The skies lit up in thunderbolts
Or is it that nature is revolting
Seeing what the Chinese have done
Have they not flattened out our mountains
Have they not pissed on our history
And desicrated our graves and sacredness

As the skies clapped their hands
And screamed with sparks of fury
The dark overhang was manacing
As the rivers tore their way downslope
Human greed and nature at variance
The very dichotomy of modernity
