The Director. (Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

The Director. (Translation) .

Woe unto the unfortunate Thames
Which flows so near tot he 'Spectator'.
The Conservative
Director
Of the 'Spectator'
Makes the breeze reek.
The reactionary
Action-men
Of the 'Spectator'
Hand in glove
Make the rounds
Stealthily.
In a gutter
A little girl
In rags
Pug-nosed
Looks at
The Conservative
Director
Of the 'Spectator'
Bursting with love.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
See Poem Hunter/ T.S. Eliot/ 3/ 56 for Eliot's original French.
The 'Spectator' is a true or fictional conservative daily newspaper in London, rather like the 'Daily Telegraph'. The director and his staff on 'The Spectator' are conservatives, tracking news, yet suspicious of it. The director himself is well-dressed and, in a surprise ending, a girl in rags in the gutter, looks at the director and is madly in love with him.
