The First Step - Poem by DR.BHAGYA CHANDRA RAJKUMAR

It was just yesterday,
Clinging,
You straightened and straddled.
Gripping my index finger
By your tiny tender fingers,
With an bewitching and ever lasting smile,
You strived the first step,
And toddled,
Murmuring monosyllabically.

I cherish your smile,
I admire your endurance and courage,
How happy I was!
Oh! My child.

You stride the first step of your own:
The first step of your life’s journey on earth
Proving,
You are homo sapien.
Each step teaches you,
And impart the knowledge and wisdom of survival.
How many steps you would cover,
Nobody knows,
But destiny!

How can I forget?
Your curious look and excitement and
Each step I hold it in my heart.
Oh! My child.

Today,
When I am old and gray,
Walking waveringly
In this dark and dusty road of life,
Speaking softly in my ears,
Holding my bony wrinkled hands,
And supporting tenderly my fragile body,
Lead me
Each step safely all the way.

Each step of today
Reminds me of your first step.
In reminiscence you rejuvenate me,
Oh! My child.
