Warn your children not to eat
or touch the fruit when raw
but processed flesh proves sweet enough
for those within the law
the police stand ready
with more than cuffs and sticks
a pouch for this and a clip for that
in a waistband full of tricks
courses on how to use them
in the love-hate thing with crime
holidays, time in lieu,
sweet lumps of overtime
lawyers with a gimlet eye
in the theatre of their profession
stand, sit or lie to trade
in expedient confession
prosecute, defend, judge
and pick up the appeals
multiplicity of role –
duplicity of deals
gaolers on the outskirts
making profit out of prisons
confirming truth in clichés
and familiar aphorisms
'every cloud has a silver lining' –
'its an ill wind' - and the rest
secure returns on doom and gloom
for those who would invest
others keep an interested eye –
Lloyds likes to tease at loss
priming profit from damage
that is hardly worth a toss
a biteen of public disorder
breeds fear and disillusion
ideal for creative games with risk
and its distribution
warn your children not to eat
or touch the fruit when raw
but processed flesh proves sweet enough
for those who own the law
