The Long Goodbye Poem by Andrew Bell

The Long Goodbye

Rating: 5.0

He opens the door
And says hello
Who are you
You're no one I know
I say hi
My name is Ben
I'm your son
And I'm your friend
No you're not
He says to me
I've no kids
Or family
You're my father
And I'm your son
There's no one left
I'm the only one
He looks confused
Looks in shock
Are you alright
You want the Doc?
He says no
And lets me in
He seems to trust
This unknown kin
We sit and talk
Until we're done
Like old times
Father to son
Today like yesterday
The same old thing
And tomorrow again
I'll remind him
Of who he is
And what he's done
Of his life with me
And my Mum
But each time I come
And knock on his door
He seems further away
And fading more
I know one day
He won't be there
Free at last
Without a care
At least I'll know
Where he is
He's up there
With his Liz
But when I'm there
I'll ask God why
He chose for my Father
This long good bye.

Thanks for the comments guys. It means alot to me. Lenore it's not about my Father, it's something I thought of years ago and wrote a few different versions of it. I just never heard of a poem about alzheimers before and I thought I could write one. But I did want it to be sad and personal.

Woa. This poem is amazing. I'm guessing it's about you're father having alzheimers, right? This is so sad and flows so beautifully, I love it.
