The Only Man She Ever Loved Poem by Francis Duggan

The Only Man She Ever Loved

Rating: 5.0

The only man she ever loved his bones in black earth lay
And she in her mid forties is showing her years in gray
And she does not use dyes or tints for to beautify her hair
And how she looks to others she says she does not care.

And though neither of them have yet fathered children and none yet have a wife
Her two sons in their early twenties are near their prime of life
And though her husband the father of her children now in his grave two years
At any mention of his name she still seems close to tears.

Still devoted to his memory though he is with the dead
He died in a work accident from injuries to his head
At the news of his death she fainted too much for her to bear
And how she looks to others now she says she does not care.

He was devoted to her great happiness they knew
And one only has one soul mate and soul mates are so few
She will not search for love again and as a widow she will stay
Until the Reaper claims her the one who will claim us all one day.

The only man she ever loved at rest forever more
He died only two years ago when he was forty four
She had in him a soul mate and soul mates are so few
And they knew love and happiness and to him she was true.
