The Picture Poem by Martha C Dias

The Picture

Rating: 3.0

I am more than a picture…
More than a silent image on the wall
Perceive me not as something to decorate your living space with;
Cause perception is nothing
But an illusion one believes to be true…
Until truth chooses to reveal itself!

I am more than a thing
Something beyond your grasp and understanding
See me not as a mere picture on the wall…
Treat me not as a trifle pleasing thing.
You know not what I know
And what I know is beyond you.

You maybe a king, a nobleman, a Connoisseur of arts
With wealth and fame beyond measure,
But what good are worldly possessions anyway
What purpose in finding a treasure?
I may seem still…
Void of life and movement
Yet in me many have found a reason to embrace life again!

Do not claim your ownership over me
I was never owned and ne'er shall be;
You can buy the frame but the picture can never be bought…
Cause it hovers far above your reach,
In a dimension untouched
By those who fail to see the depth in the deep.
You think you understand my aesthetics
But what you fail to understand is
That I am beyond your understanding!

What you think of me or say of me
Are thoughts and words but of your own.
And though it's said words have the power to destroy…
I will let no words bruise me that easy.
My fortress isn't power ….neither is it vendetta
My fortress is your weakness,
That which you hide so well….
Because I know the story that you're afraid to tell.

I am no dream for the future
I am no water for the sand…
What good is it anyway?
Dreams get shattered
Water dries up in the desert sun
They both get forgotten
Slowly…..steadily…..surely…. in the long tiresome run!

While I hang here
Look at me how you want
When you want
Where you want
Yet I'll be out of your reach…
Maybe you will comprehend these words
When your wants transform into needs….
Until then remember I am more than a picture hanging on the wall.
