The Portrait Poem by Sergio D'Amico

The Portrait

I am a portrait hanging on a wall
displayed to be seen by all
by somebody you may already know
I watch people come and go.

I start as a canvas white
I shine a splendid bright
the colours are not of my design
I am made to be sublime.

I might have touched your soul
made your broken heart whole
My touch burns more than the sun
over many hearts I have won.

I am one great creation
A result of an inspiration
A startling revelation
A soul's longing aspiration.

I am the divine combination,
of birth and creation.
I am a heightened expression
leaving a celestial impression.

Surely my shadow shall loom
from this wall, beyond this room
I live in this world, I live in dreams
I am a gateway to fantastic realms.

My beauty takes on more than one shape
to hidden thoughts I provide escape
from the grasp of unworthy clutches
and all that a conscience touches.

I shall live beyond forever
death shall touch me never
I am a paradox of time
History's greatest rhyme.

I am of human design
who is of godly design
but if I am to live forever
Surely I am of higher endeavor.

If God was inspired to create
men led by love and hate
have I not a Godly chore
when I inspire to create more?

And He who helps create more
is he any less of a god or more?
What is men, What am I,
Are we not God in somebody's eye?
