The Power Of Music Poem by Katherine Egan

The Power Of Music

The only light came streaming through the window. Filtering through the thin blinds. You could see the dust particles in the air. Floating and dancing to music only they could hear. But as I watched, I began to hear faint notes that only grew louder and more wondrous and captivating. It seemed like the music came from the light itself. The air around me seemed to move to the rhythm. Smooth and beautiful it flowed, giving life to everything and everyone that heard it. Bringing with it joy and sadness. The leaves rustled with the wondrous melody and the flowers swayed to the rhythm. And I, closed my eyes and breathed it in, tasting every note and savoring it. Letting the music take me away to beautiful places. It was like magic. The way the whole world seemed to melt away, leaving only me and the music. But then the magic ended as the song did. And reality came pouring back into my mind. The silence was deafening. It was as if all wonder was gone from the world. The flowers no longer swayed. The air no longer danced. And the light no longer gave music.
Slowly I reached down, and pulled out my violin from its dusty case. The bow was was tightened and the strings tuned. I set the bow on the string and pulled. A beautiful, melodic note came out. I could almost see the ripple sending out from the instrument. Waking up the light. The flowers turned their heads and the dust rose. Waiting. Slowly I placed my fingers on the string. Pressing down and forming the notes that popped into my head. I played. The notes flowed from my brain to my fingers and then out into the world. The notes danced with the air and the flowers. The people looked up. Up to the brilliantly blue sky and blinding sun. The clouds seemed to fade away leaving nothing but sun and wonder.
