The Power Of Warmth Poem by Diana van den Berg

The Power Of Warmth

A feather
too
weighs
heavy
on the boundaries of my heart
and my smile
flickers plastic and dutiful
and my eyes
turn inward
glassy and mostly blind

but...

the sunshine love
of my cat and my dog
and my three Guardian Angels
and the connecting hugs
of my friends
and the kindness of my family

lift
my eyes
and heart
and shoulders
to the sun

and I see
green tree arms
against the azure African sky
wide with cloud-paintings
and trilling with avian souls

and my smile bio-regrades
on my lips
and spreads like melted butter
to my eyes
and my heart
and my toes

and my eyes turn outward
to a vibrant world,
and wistful with the treasures of the past
and responsive to the gifts of the present,
I look to the heart-beat future
where I am needed again
and the feather flies
light
lighter
high
higher
fluttering farewell
with the sun
on its edges.
