The Privileged Few Poem by David Wood

The Privileged Few

Those privileged to rule over us
Have had a wonderful education
From private schools to an
Oxbridge education, many paid
For by their parents, who paid
For their child's education by
Using offshore tax havens
In the Caribbean, to save paying
Income tax on their earnings.

They can speak Latin, know
Every Roman emperor, and
Have a good grounding in
The history of the British Empire.
Therefore, they are deemed
The intelligent elite whose destiny
Is to grab political power using
Newly acquired influence and rule.

Yet, with all their education they
Have no idea of the price of a
Pint of milk or a loaf of bread.
They lack compassion, or even a
Grain of common sense, as we
Can see of their mis management of
The Covid pandemic, running the
Economy, and their lack of action

On saving the planet from the
Ravages of climate change, as they
Grant more drilling licences for the
Extraction of even more fossil fuels
To those oil companies who make
Considerable donations to their
Political party. They have neither
Honesty, shame or honour. They are
The privileged few.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Every foreign leader looks at our Prime Minister as a buffoon, a clown, which is what he is. Therefore he, or his government, has no credibility when he meets them.
