The Unattended Friendship Poem by Holly Jamestone

The Unattended Friendship

The Unattended Friendship
With the leaves across the lawn
Scatters in the doorway
Unconnected, patience drawn

It dances gently in the breeze
And ponders one last waltz
Its tattered skirt and broken bow
Erode from hairline faults

Crescendoing with dusk's last gasp
It tugs for one last time
Its grip no more than tenuous
Its meaning lacking rhyme

The Unattended Friendship
Burrowed in the soil
Its feelers searching for a sprout
Though much too tired to toil

With one last look, the grass now brown
The leaves' mulch crisply scattered
The photographs and memories
Soon fade with all that mattered

Beaten down by life's neglect
And unprotected play
Sun now set, forever dimmed
Momentum slips away
