The Village Twilight Poem by Pallab Chaudhury

The Village Twilight

Rating: 5.0

Keeping the the horizon on the background
The sun has just gone down.
A little early, the cool and calm shadow
Of the village had been over the pond
And on the green field adjacent.
After the day's grazing the cows were
On the way to their shed.
Seeing the master on the way
They told something in a sign language.
The master then brought immediately
Some wet husking in a bucket
And poured it on the cattle-tub.
Seeing the rags of jack-fruit there
With the husking they started to gore.
The old mother on the verandah then
Started shouting- Come here- My dear son!
This crazy bull will lift you up
With its long horns!
Following mother's advice he rushed out
And stood, for a while on the court yard
To finish the work of tying the rope.
The equable house wife then came down
To the Basil platform to offer u-lu-lu
Holding a long breathe.
The younger daughter, nearby,
With closed hands kept on the chest,
Looked something with closed eyes, for a while.
The u-lu-lu sound then ran out
With the rhythm of the dusk
Crossing the farthest end of the village.
The pair of white duck with a chain on the ankle
Was waiting by the side of the door step;
The teen-aged girl took it to a basket
With a cushion of straw laid on it.
The nightfall then, entered slowly
Into the ribbed-guard stage.
The hundred ribbed-guard-flowers were
As if, hundred ladies on the rear side of shed wall
With yellow gowns - showing their vanity.
Coming out from the bush with tiny legs
The fire flies took their night's first flights
At the tail-end of bitter-melon-stage.
In the garden's darkness, it appeared like
Someone, as if blinking.
The sereus flower was about to bloom
And was waiting on the house-apron.
Standing in the darkness of the village
A poet being delighted by the beautiful scene
Kept immediately his humble submission
To the Lord of life- May this conversation
Between man and nature
Continue for years to come!
