The Way She Is Poem by Dean Meredith

The Way She Is

Says she’ll come over
So you wait all night
Finally turns up and
Assumes you’re alright

She asks how you are
You lie and say fine
She was with friends
And lost track of time

You send her messages
But she rarely replies
She says don’t worry
About those other guys

She has no time and
There’s too much to do
She fills up her life and
Leaves no room for you

Her phone calls are seldom
Her visits short and rare
She seems to come and go
As if she’s not really there

You’re keen to see her
She works next door
No lunch, perhaps coffee?
But even that’s a chore

When you do get together
It’s like you were never apart
Shows she still has feelings
Again you give her your heart

You try to make sense of it
And somehow understand
How she says she cares but
Avoids your touching hand

Your body’s so tired
Your mind won’t rest
So much to tell her
To get off your chest

It clogs your lungs
You struggle to breath
It fills your mind and
She’s all that you need

But you get that feeling
Something’s not right
You blame yourself
And get all uptight

You get so frustrated and
Think you’ve had enough
That highway to adventure
Suddenly got quite rough

You become fed up when
She struggles to come round
You want to be with her but
She’s nowhere to be found

Hides things from you
So you don’t get hurt
Secret rendezvous and
Constant need to flirt

Can’t stand it any longer
Start to lose the plot
You go a little crazy
OK – you go a lot!

Think she don’t love you
Your mind starts to wander
They’re only mates so be
Careful what you squander

You want to be better
Love her as you should
You want to trust her
If only you could

But it’s always about you
Trying to make things work
You feel like a sap
And a bit of a jerk

You’re just another flower
She’s a travelling bee
She’s a piano player
You’re just another key

When work drags on
And weekends run dry
Hope becomes a rainbow
In a dark foreboding sky

You begin to forget her
Smells and tastes fade
Her smile goes missing
With dreams once made

Too much to remind you
Things you can’t keep
Have to get rid of them
And then you can sleep

You wait for time
To do what it should
Help you forget her
So she’s gone for good

How will you cope?
Without bitter regret
It’s a bit like drowning
Without getting wet

When they burn you
And soul is set free
Just before it goes and
Has one last look to see

It won’t be surprised
Not to find her there
She’s just so very busy
Has little time to spare

And into the night
When wondering’s done
At least you found out
That she’s not the one

She’ll sleep soundly
With cats at her feet
Dreaming of adventures
And strays she has to meet

What a great poem. Love it's lilting rhythmic quality. Says so much! Well done!
