The Young Boy Who Fell Into A Manhole Poem by Daya Nandan

The Young Boy Who Fell Into A Manhole

A 15 year old boy was walking along the pedestrian walkway,
With no idea what was about to befall him that day,
He was on the way to school with his young schoolmates,
Trying to reach the school before they close the gates,

Upon his journey he noticed many uncovered manholes,
Problems that should be managed by the authorities controls,
He soon fell into a manhole covered with branches and leaves,
The original metal cover probably stolen by local thieves,

He fell on his right foot and hit the right side of his body,
Members of the public rushed since he needed somebody,
He was rushed to the hospital to be treated fast,
In hopes that the possibly fatal injuries would not last,

His right kidney was ruptured from the impact of the fall,
He had internal bleeding, blood pressuring his abdominal wall,
At last they removed the ruptured kidney and stopped the bleeding.
He was saved through an operation that good doctors were leading,

This is not the first time this has happened in our land,
Many young children have already been captured by death's hand,
The proper authorities responsible should pay more attention,
So that they can further improve safety for the people in our nation,

They should perform regular checkups to check for missing manholes,
Replace the metal covers with other types of material to achieve their goals,
Strong plastic material would work or perhaps a removable cover of concrete? ,
So that thieves will stop selling metal covers to scrap metal shops in the street,

I hope proper steps are taken to ensure that these accidents are put to a end,
I pray that the preventable injuries and deaths of innocent people stop in our land,
All of us play a part, even normal citizens should report about missing manholes,
Everybody's safety is drastically increased if everybody plays their roles!
