This Day Poem by Hannington Mumo

This Day

This is the day of resolves that I make
To render my life smoother to run
And more amiable to live than before,
And my earthly sojourn easier to man.

Hitherto I lived life the way I best could,
In a fashion of one without light,
Or one confused along a long path
That led to unending lack of delight.

This day to the world I make known my aim
Of forsaking simple living and mottled specks;
I henceforward shall fuller live to achieve
Goals that had gone to wrecks.

No man and no woman and no child shall joke
About the progress so avowed to flare above
The derisions of mortal inhibitions of the world;
Come hate and malice, come care or love.

Like a seasoned she goat knows where her tethers lie,
Or, like a tutored dog understands where his meals are served,
So shall my hunches know where the sails of routines are rowed,
Till shame and calamity are at least halved.
